PP plastic is a thermoplastic made from the polymerization of propylene. It is widely used in the manufacturing industry due to its unique properties. At RT, PP material is one of the most common manufacturing materials and is commonly found in our following machining services:

Physical Properties of PP Material

Light Weight

PP material is one of the lightest among all plastics, with a density ranging from 0.90 to 0.91 g/cm³. This makes the products made of it lightweight, which is more convenient during handling and usage. For instance, in some application scenarios where weight is a concern, such as in some interior parts of automobiles, the use of PP material can effectively reduce the vehicle's weight.

Low Water Absorption Rate

It is particularly stable in water, with a water absorption rate of only 0.01% within 24 hours. This characteristic enables PP material to perform excellently in wet environments or applications involving contact with water. It won't lead to performance degradation or deformation due to water absorption. For example, it is used in manufacturing bathroom products like sinks and bathtubs, as well as some outdoor waterproof equipment.

Good Formability

It has good plasticity and fluidity, and is easy to be processed into products of various shapes and sizes through multiple molding processes such as injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion. It can meet the design requirements of different products, with high production efficiency and relatively low cost. It is widely used in the manufacturing of numerous plastic products in industrial production and daily life, like various plastic containers, toys, and stationery.

High Heat Distortion Temperature

PP material has good heat resistance. Its melting point is between 164 and 170 °C. Products made of it can be sterilized at temperatures above 100 °C. Without external force, it won't deform at 150 °C and can be used for a long time at around 100 °C, which can meet the usage requirements in some high-temperature environments, such as the high-temperature sterilization process in food processing and some industrial components that need to withstand relatively high temperatures.

Good Surface Gloss

The surface of PP products is smooth and has an aesthetic luster. It is easy to be colored. Different pigments can be added to make products in various bright colors, having good decorative properties and improving the appearance quality and market competitiveness of the products. Colorful PP plastic toys and household items are good examples.

High Strength

It has relatively high tensile strength and excellent resistance to bending fatigue, capable of withstanding certain external forces without being easily damaged. For example, when manufacturing plastic pipes, PP material can endure a certain water pressure, ensuring the stability and safety of the pipes under normal usage conditions. When making furniture, like PP chairs, they can also bear the weight of the human body while maintaining structural stability.

Good Abrasion Resistance

Its surface has a relatively high hardness and excellent abrasion resistance. After long-term use and friction, there will hardly be obvious wear marks on the surface. For example, PP woven bags can still maintain good integrity and are not easily damaged during frequent loading, unloading, and transportation when in contact and friction with other objects.

Advantages of PP Material

Excellent Chemical Stability

PP material has strong chemical stability. Except for being degraded by strong oxidants and non-polar solvents, it has good corrosion resistance to most acids, alkalis, salts, and other chemical substances. It can maintain stable performance in different chemical environments. Therefore, it is widely used in fields with high requirements for chemical stability, such as the chemical industry, food industry, and medicine industry, like chemical pipes, food packaging, and medical syringes.

Good Electrical Insulation Performance

It has excellent high-frequency insulation performance. It hardly absorbs water, and its insulation performance is not affected by humidity. Moreover, it has a relatively high dielectric constant and breakdown voltage, with good anti-voltage and arc resistance. It can be used to manufacture electrical insulation products, such as the insulation layer of electric wires and cables and electrical appliance shells, ensuring the safe operation and stability of electrical equipment.

Non-toxic and Odorless

PP material is non-toxic, odorless, and tasteless in itself, meeting the food hygiene and safety standards and being harmless to the human body. It can be directly used in fields involving contact with food, such as food packaging and tableware manufacturing. For example, common PP plastic food storage boxes, food packaging bags, and water cups are safe to use.

Strong Impact Resistance

It has good impact resistance. When subjected to a certain degree of external impact, it is not easy to break or be damaged, which can effectively extend the service life of products. For example, in some occasions where impact needs to be endured, like automobile bumpers and sports equipment, the use of PP material can improve the impact resistance of products and reduce the damage caused by collisions.

Recyclability

PP material belongs to thermoplastic plastics and has good recyclability. Waste PP products can be recycled and reprocessed to make new plastic products, which is conducive to saving resources and protecting the environment and meets the requirements of sustainable development.

Low Cost

Compared with some other engineering plastics, the production cost of PP material is relatively low. It has a wide range of raw material sources and simple processing techniques. Therefore, its products are relatively affordable and have a high cost-performance ratio. It is widely used in the market and can meet the needs of different consumers and industries.

PP Material FAQs

What are the main properties of PP material?

PP (polypropylene) material is lightweight, chemically resistant, wear-resistant, and has good insulation properties. It is widely used in automotive parts, home appliance casings, packaging containers, and other fields, especially suitable for applications requiring corrosion resistance and lightweight properties.

What is the temperature resistance of PP material?

PP material has a long-term use temperature range of 0°C to 100°C and can withstand short-term exposure to 120°C. In high-temperature environments, PP may experience slight deformation, so it is not recommended for long-term high-temperature use.

Is PP material environmentally friendly?

PP material is a recyclable thermoplastic that complies with environmental standards such as RoHS. We provide eco-friendly PP materials to support sustainable development needs.

How about the strength and durability of PP material?

PP material has high impact resistance and toughness, but for high-load or high-strength applications, it may require reinforcement (e.g., adding glass fibers). We can provide reinforced PP materials based on your requirements.

Can PP material undergo surface treatment?

PP material has low surface energy, which may result in poor adhesion for direct spraying or printing. However, through surface pretreatment (e.g., flame treatment or plasma treatment), adhesion can be significantly improved to meet spraying, printing, and other requirements.

How difficult is it to process PP material?

PP material has a certain shrinkage rate during processing (typically 1.5%-2.5%), but through precise mold design and process control, we can effectively minimize deformation and ensure dimensional accuracy.

What color options are available for PP material?

We offer a variety of standard colors for PP materials and also support custom color matching to meet your design or branding requirements.

How does the cost of PP material compare?

PP material is an economical engineering plastic, typically costing less than ABS, PC, and other materials while offering excellent overall performance, making it a highly cost-effective choice.
